Real Estate: Demolitions and New Home Permits Decline in 2019: Plus Sales and Featured Listings

5 Quaker Center was demolished.Though the Scarsdale Village Trustees did not address changes in the Village Code to address home teardowns, it appears that the number of home demolitions and new building permits fell for the second consecutive year.

Perhaps market forces, rather than preservation laws, have influenced development in Scarsdale.

According to the Scarsdale Building Department, last year, home demolitions or teardowns declined. In 2017 there were 31, in 2018 the number fell to 26 and in 2019 there were just 18 home demolitions.

Permits for new homes followed suit. In 2019, permits for new homes fell from 32 in 2017, to 28 in 2018 to just 20 in 2019.

Changes in the tax law and the higher prices of new homes as compared to existing homes, may have deterred buyers and discouraged builders from embarking on new projects.
