Mid-Century Modern on Morris Lane to Be Torn Down

One of the few mid-century modern prairie style homes in Scarsdale will soon be history after the applicants were cleared to take it down at a hearing of the Committee for Historic Preservation on October 20, 2020.

The first hearing on the home at 70 Morris Lane was held in July, but a decision was held over when it came to light that the applicants had the wrong name for the architect. The architect for the 1956 home was Simon B. Zelnik, not Zelwich as originally stated. Zelnik designed four synagogues, two which are still in operation and one that has been turned into the Bronx Museum, six movie theaters, and three which are still standing in New York along. He was the architect for the Elgin Theater which later became the Joyce Theater, known for its dance performances.

In Scarsdale he also designed another mid-century modern home at 100 Mamaroneck Road that later became the “playhouse” for a home at 11 Dolma Road that the committee voted to preserve at their meeting last month. That home was the subject of an article in Architectural Forum in 1948.

However neither architectural historian Andrew Dolkhart nor the Committee for Historic Preservation thought that this work made Zelnik “a master,” whose work was worthy of preservation.

In a very speedy hearing they told the applicant’s lawyers that they did not need to make their presentation.

Only one committee member, Lauren Bender, spoke in defense of the house saying, “There are very few mid-century modern homes that are special in Scarsdale, and this is one of them. It should not be cast off as an insignificant piece of architecture. I think it is in keeping with mid-century modern design, built in the prairie style and utilizing spartan materials. It is a home that was commissioned by a noted architect and made with care. I think it’s important to appreciate it for what it is.”
