When I moved from the city to Scarsdale, one of my favorite changes from city life was Halloween. Decorating a house, trick or treating up and down the street and making some Halloween treats in my kitchen are still some of the things I enjoy most about the holiday.
Here are some of my favorite tips for Halloween:
-get festive with fall decor and Halloween decorations. To keep squirrels away from your pumpkins, rub them with Vaseline or Aquaphor.
-buy nut free candy to give out. With all the food allergies, save the candies with peanuts and nuts for home.
-make some of your own treats, like this Halloween Chocolate bark. It’s one of my favorite super easy, Halloween desserts. Dark chocolate is high in antioxidants while most packaged chocolate Halloween candy is lacking. So, while this may not be exactly “healthy”, it’s definitely a better option than much of what you can buy. Plus it’s fun to make and lets you or your kids be creative.
Recipe: Halloween Chocolate Bark
(peanut and tree nut (except for coconut))
Makes 10 - 15 pieces depending on desired size
Ingredients
12 - 14 oz good quality (60-70% cacoa) chocolate bar or chocolate chips
Optional Toppings
Halloween sprinkles
edible candy eyes
white chocolate chips
Halloween oreos
shredded coconut
marshmallows
Instructions
Cover quarter sheet pan (9x13) with parchment paper or silicon mat. Place chocolate in microwave safe bowl. Heat in 20 second intervals until about 90 percent melted. Stir until melted the rest of the way. Pour chocolate onto prepared pan. Use spatula to spread chocolate evenly over pan. (It doesn’t need to reach the edges.) Add desired toppings. Press gently into chocolate. Allow to cool at room temperature at least 2 hours or refrigerate 30 minutes. Once hardened, break into pieces.
