Edgemont's varsity boys tennis team is in full swing and looking to make its mark on the A League of Conference 2/Section 1. There was so much interest and depth of talent among Edgemont's boys tennis players that a second varsity team is being fielded to accommodate the number of varsity-level players, as the Panthers return all starters from 2012.
The Blue Team, reflecting much of last year's varsity roster, is guided by returning Edgemont Head Coach, Jeff Menaker. That team is playing in the A League with a 3 singles, 4 doubles format against teams from Scarsdale, Mamaroneck and Pelham. The White Team, in its first season, will be coached by Edgemont's Girls' Varsity Coach, Katie Feinstein. The White Team will play as an independent varsity squad with a 3 singles, 2 doubles format, playing teams from Westlake, Ardsley and Dobbs Ferry. 25 strong, including 4 freshmen and 2 new middle school players, the team will be led by senior captain Cole Chidekel. Both teams are poised to make a deep run in the first ever Section 1 Team Tournament later this spring.
Edgemont's 3-4 team (the blue team) will start the season with some young talent at the singles positions, including 2 freshmen, Akshat Sanghavi and Aaditya Jain, along with sophomore Allan Xu. While Jain and Xu are both returning singles players, Sanghavi will start at singles in his first year at the varsity level. Though these three will start the season at the singles positions, they will constantly be challenged by players such as senior Cole Chidekel, sophomore Kartik Subbanna and others who will fight for these spots.
Coach Menaker says, "I'm really looking forward to this season to gauge the growth of returning players and to see how far new additions can take us." Both EHS varsity teams can be seen in action on Saturday, April 6, when Edgemont hosts the first ever Jim San Marco Invitational Team Tennis Tournament. This tournament features the top 16 high school teams from New York City and Westchester, including public, private and parochial schools. Scarsdale HS will host 1/4 of the draw on their courts on April 6, while the rest of the event will take place in Edgemont. Final rounds will take place throughout the day on April 13th at EHS.
Edgemont Girls Lacrosse Team Meets Nanuet on April 4
The Edgemonts girls varsity lacrosse team is back and ready to play. With bright new talent and the potential for a section-winning season, the girls prepared for their first match up against Nanuet. The team looks strong on both ends of the field. Katie Kocaj and Frankie Klerer both returning as juniors lead the defense, with new talents Lilianna Christie and rising defender Emily Turchin behind them. Gaby Susz, the junior on tap to play D1 college lax, runs the offense with the help of returning sophomores Julie Miner and Madi Welker and returning junior Taylor Wald as her wingmen. Annekka Chao also steps up as a first year freshmen adding to the existing talent. Running the mid field are speedsters Dani Meyerson, Katie Pollack and Shelby Borkenstein. In the net and making stops left and right is senior Carolina Herrera. On injured reserve but healing quickly are Maya Melamed, Sydney Berkman and Lolly Sanchez. The team is led by veteran coaches Rob Breitenbach, Lindsay Robinson, and second year coach Kerri Hirsch. The girls are geared up and ready to kick butt, so cheer them on at 4:15 on Thursday April 4 at EHS.
