Alexandra La pierre, Author of Belle Greene at Scarsdale Library

Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2024 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

LapierreInternationally best-selling author Alexandra Lapierre will visit Scarsdale Adult School to converse with our students about her book BELLE GREENE which is soon to be a television series.

BELLE GREENE tells the remarkable true story of Belle da Costa Greene. Belle is one of the most prominent and respected librarians in American history, known for her curation and collection of rare books and manuscripts at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Yet Belle hid a criminal secret. She was a Black woman passing as white in a violently racist America at the turn of the 20th century.

“This novelization of [Belle da Costa Greene’s] luxuriant, if fraught, career—Edith Wharton’s Gilded Age meets W.E.B. Du Bois’s The Talented Tenth—captivates throughout.” —Oprah Daily

Flamboyant, brilliant, stunningly beautiful, Belle was a sensation to both fashionable society and the male-dominated art world. It is this brilliant essence that Lapierre brings to life. Through her years of research and interviews (an inevitable challenge since Belle destroyed all her personal papers to harbor her secret) Lapierre pays a stunning tribute to a woman whose accomplishments, relationships, and singularity were as complex and fascinating as the collections she helped curate.
