CHP Finds that 41 Hampton Road was Designed by Noted Architect W. Stanwood Phillips, Plus Home Sales and Featured Listings

The Committee for Historic Preservation deferred a decision on an application to demolish a historic Tudor home at 41 Hampton Road at their June 29 meeting. The Governor suddenly removed his executive order permitting virtual meetings, catching the committee by surprise. Only four members were present at the in person meeting at Scarsdale Village Hall.

Developer Eilon Amidor applied to raze the home, providing no historic information about it on his application. He argued that the home was set too far back on the property and stood at an elevation of 238 feet above sea level, causing drainage issues for neighbors.

The committee discovered that the Tudor was designed by architect W. Stanwood Phillips whose work included noted homes in Scarsdale and Fieldston. Phillips was an architect for prominent Scarsdale builder Walter J. Collet. He is mentioned in Andrew Dolkart’s 2012 Cultural Resource Survey for the brick and stonework on his facades. The report says, “Other Tudor houses, such as 39 Chesterfield Road (W. Stanwood Phillips, 1931; Figure 3-30) are faced primarily in stone, always laid in a random manner, giving the appearance of stones found rather than carefully cut.” Lindenbaum reported that Phillips work in Scarsdale included homes and a building downtown including, “26 Cushman Road, 4 Colvin Road, 23 Cohawney Road, 38 and 39 Chesterfield Roads, 48 Brewster Road, 20 Dolma Road, 27-33 Tompkins Road and the former HSBC Bank Building on Popham Road that was originally designed as a service station.

Commenting on the house on Hampton Road, CHP Chair Adam Lindenbaum said, “I have driven by –and there are striking features… the slate roof, diamond paned windows and irregular brick patterning. From the curb test and the architect I think that more research is warranted.”

The four members of the board agreed to adjourn the application until their July meeting.
