Artwork by 16 Edgemont and Scarsdale high school students is currently on display at the Pace University Small Works Invitational 2010, though there is nothing small about it. The exhibit consists of 206 pieces representing a wide range of talent from 30 area high schools.
Edgemont's Rachel Salamone captures with acrylics a meloncholy story told by a pair of weathered and well-worn cowboy boots. Carly Zelenetz creates a wintry nostalgia with ice skates hung beside an old barn in a piece entitled "Old Love." Other pieces were more emotional--Julie Robine's "Wrath--Queen of Hearts" put a vixen twist on Alice In Wonderland's monarch spewing a deck of cards with everything enraged in red; Rachel Garben's "Mellifluous" is an abstract design that seems to convey sounds that are clean and flowing.
Justin Arnold's wildlife photograph 'Show Me Your Teeth' is a delightful slice of Africana showing a lion cub having her canines examined by confident animal-handler hands.
Highlights from Scarsdale High School feature organic subjects including a charcoal project created with astonishing detail-- Emily Knapp's "Study of Human Spine." Gabriel Silver finds serenity in an untitled digital photo of two motionless storks. The consistency and symmetry of Rebecca Hallae's "Fire Leaves," mimics textile design, and Carly Cohen's "Garden Series" uses mixed media to create a whimsical abstraction of wild flowers. The Pace University Small Works Invitational 2010 offers a plethora of promising talent in and around the Westchester area. The exhibition is in the Choate House Gallery and runs through March 4.
