Man Asleep at the Wheel, a Wild Turkey and a Fire on the BRP Trail

Arrested: On March 30, around 2:15 a.m., police responded to a report of a car parked in the middle of the roadway at Popham and Post Roads. Investigation determined that the driver – Gregorio Daniel Garcia Gonzalez, 33, of Pelham – was asleep at the wheel. After police woke up the driver and spoke with him, it was determined that the driver was intoxicated. He was arrested on charges of a stopping/standing violation on a highway, refusal to take a breath test and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to appear in court at a later date.

On March 27, police arrested Emanuel A. Smith, 29, of Mount Vernon, on charges of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speeding in a school zone, operation of a motor vehicle by an unlicensed driver, and failure to exhibit a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop on Mamaroneck Road.

Theft
On March 25, a Popham Road business owner reported an employee had been stealing from the business by using a credit card to make an unauthorized personal purchase of $416.16.

A Murray Hill Road resident reported a package had been stolen from outside his house March 25. He said the package had been delivered by FedEx. Shortly thereafter, a person wearing an Amazon vest removed the package and left a box of garbage there in its place.

Scam
On March 27, a Post Road woman reported she attempted to purchase concert tickets via a Facebook post and then realized the seller was operating a scam. No money was lost.

Suspicious
At 5:30 a.m., police received a report of a man checking car door handles on Drake Road. He was seen getting into a sedan and leaving the scene, as per a witness. Police canvassed the area but did not find the man.

A teen with a clipboard was reportedly going door to door in Edgewood asking for money to attend plumbing school March 30.

Death
A Massachusetts caller requested a welfare check of a 72-year-old White Road family member after the caller lost contact with her March 27. Police checked on the 71-year-old woman and discovered she had died.

Knife
On March 29, a caller reported a large kitchen knife on Popham Road. Patrol arrived on scene and collected the knife. Police examined to see if the knife was possibly used in the commission of a crime. Based off patrol's observations and the condition of the knife, it was determined that the knife had been put out for garbage but had fallen into the roadway when being collected. The knife was brought to headquarters, packaged up and properly disposed off.

Help
Police helped a homeless man on East Parkway find a shelter in White Plains and assisted him in boarding a train to get there March 25.

Civil matter
On March 30, a Brewster Road resident reported her neighbor keeps driving his car on her side of their shared driveway, going onto her property. Police advised her it was a civil matter.

Cars and roadways
On March 25, police issued a New Rochelle driver summonses for insurance, registration and licensing violations following a traffic stop on Weaver Street. The car’s license plate was removed as well.

On March 26, police notified Verizon about fallen wires on Wayside Lane.

On March 26, a driver pulled into the parking lot of police headquarters to report a road rage incident. The driver stated he was traveling south on Post Road when a driver of a Honda SUV got too close to his car and attempted to pass him. The driver was unable to pass him, however, and began to tailgate him while flashing high beams. When the driver who reported the incident turned into police headquarters, the SUV continued west on Fenimore at a high rate of speed toward the Bronx River Parkway. The SUV was described as a newer model white Honda Pilot with blue fog lights, blue under-glow lights, blue daytime running lights and dark tints.

A rock wall on Post Road collapsed and was partially blocking the roadway March 28. The highway department cleared debris from the roadway and put up temporary supports to keep the wall from further eroding.

A vehicle with 14 outstanding parking tickets, totaling $425, was parked on East Parkway March 28. As per the court, the car’s owner already made arrangements to pay off the tickets; so police took no further actions.

On March 28 and 29, police notified Verizon about fallen wires on Griffen Avenue.

On March 28, a caller said he wanted to advise of a vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign at Brewster and Kingston roads, almost causing a collision.

On March 28, an accident involving a 17-year-old pedestrian and a 52-year-old driver on Brite Avenue was reported. The pedestrian alleged the driver’s car struck him in the abdomen. He said he was not injured, and he refused medical attention. The driver said he stopped in front of a Brite Avenue house and then continued along Brite Avenue. He said he was unaware that he had struck a pedestrian.

A recently paved portion of Kingston and Montrose roads was uneven and thus causing a tripping hazard March 29. Police informed the highway department for follow-up.

Flexible construction fencing blew into roadway on Crossway March 29. Police removed it from the roadway.

On March 29, police advised Verizon about an open door on an electrical panel at Mamaroneck and Post roads.

Construction barricades were blocking Fox Meadow Road for no reason March 29. Police relocated them to a better position.

Police notified the water department of a water main break on Secor Road March 30.

Police provided traffic control around a disabled car on Post Road while the driver waited for roadside assistance March 30.

An elderly Boulevard resident’s car’s trunk was open, and the car was running March 30. Police closed the trunk and turned off the car.

Two car accidents were officially reported in the Village this week.

Animals
A wild turkey was reported on Fox Meadow Road March 27.

A wild turkey was reported on Post Road March 31. Police gave it a courtesy transport to a more wooded area, away from traffic.

Village code
Police issued landscapers summonses for using gas-powered blowers in violation of village code on Bradley Road March 25.

Police removed and discarded illegally posted signs from Popham Road March 28.

Neighbors complained of a loud party on Morris Lane March 29. Police informed the host of the complaint. The host said he would end the party and send guests home.

Lost and found
An Oak Way woman reported losing her license and wallet March 26.

Firefighters
On March 25, firefighters assisted at a car accident on the Hutchinson River Parkway.

Firefighters and police responded to the Bronx River Parkway trail for a reported brush fire started by youths March 26. Upon arrival, crews received an updated location on the walking trail north of Popham Road. Police indicated that there was a small smoldering fire located on the bank of the Bronx River that was previously attended by two youths. The youths dispersed upon police arrival. The smoldering fire area consisted of a 1 foot by 1 foot round makeshift pit containing a fuel package of assorted twigs surrounded by rocks. Firefighters doused the smoldering debris with a water can to ensure complete extinguishment.

Firefighters stood by for Con Edison at the site of a malfunctioning stove in a Mamaroneck Road building March 28.

On March 30, firefighters were dispatched to a Lawrence Road house for an outside smoke investigation. Upon arrival, crews encountered an unauthorized burn. Specifically, brush and yard debris were burning and overflowing from a fire pit approximately five feet from a wooden deck with an inadequate water supply to extinguish the open burn. Firefighters instructed the resident to extinguish the fire and educated the resident on requirements for a controlled burn.

A Brookby Road resident accidentally got locked out if his house March 31. Firefighters checked the resident’s ID and made access into the house through an unlocked window.
