A minor fire was observed in the engine compartment and was extinguished using a fire extinguisher. As a precaution, firefighters deployed a 200-foot hose line to provide fire protection in the event the fire reignited during rescue operations. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was found unresponsive but breathing and trapped in the driver's seat. The patient's lower extremities were pinned and severely crushed by the brake pedal assembly and dashboard, preventing self-extrication and removal from the vehicle. Crews then displaced and removed the entrapping components, allowing for the patient's safe extrication. Once freed, the patient was immobilized on a long backboard and secured in a Stokes basket. Due to the steep terrain, fire department personnel established a low-angle rope rescue system to safely raise the patient up the embankment to the roadway. Upon reaching the top of the embankment, the patient was transferred to awaiting Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel for continued treatment and transport.
