Two Burglaries and More than a Dozen Car Break-ins in Scarsdale

Two burglaries and more than a dozen car break-ins in Fox Meadow and Scarsdale Village had police on the go this week. The numerous break-ins to cars and homes took place between July 30 and August 2 and may have been the work of one man.

Burglaries:
On Popham Road, an 80-year-old woman awoke to find a man standing over her in her bedroom at 4 am on July 30. She described the man as Hispanic or white, and 5'10" to 6' tall. She called police after the man fled. Police found the screen removed from a rear door and it appeared that the man had entered and exited through that door. An office in the house was heavily ransacked and papers were strewn all over the desk and the floor. A laptop and keyboard were missing. In addition, credit cards and a driver's license were taken as well as an antique necklace and a set of keys. When the suspect fled, it appears that he broke a pot in the kitchen.

On Highland Way a man was awoken by the sound of someone in his house at 3 am on July 30. He went downstairs and saw someone exiting the house out of the front door, which had been unlocked. The resident found that a laptop computer, containers of change, $200 and assorted credit cards were missing. Police searched the area and found the empty coin containers at the corner of Fox Meadow Road and Highland Way.

Car Break-ins:
A Stonehouse Road man reported that he saw someone enter two of his neighbor's cars at 2 am on July 30. As it was dark, it was difficult to describe the suspect. Police contacted the neighbors who said they usually leave their cars unlocked in the driveway. They found that both cars, a BMW and a Volvo, had been ransacked. About $45 was taken from the BMW and nothing was missing from the Volvo.

That same night a Land Rover, also left unlocked on Stonehouse Road was ransacked but nothing was taken. A handprint was found on the right rear passenger door.

On Crane Road a 2010 BMW was entered overnight on July 30. A Tom Tom GPS and $3.00 in coins were stolen. At another home on Crane Road, an unlocked 2012 Toyota was entered and $15 in quarters was taken. At a third house on Crane Road, an unlocked 2012 GMC was entered, but nothing was taken.

On Woodland Road a 2011 Volkswagen Toureg was entered and tossed overnight on 7/30 – 7/31.

Two cars parked on Popham Road were broken into. A GPS and a digital camera were stolen from a 2003 Buick Rendezvous and another GPS and $25 were taken from a 2005 Buick Rendezvous. The resident reported that her 5-year-old son had woken up at 3:10 am and surmised that he might have heard the suspects outside.

A Larch Lane woman reported that her 2007 Honda Odyssey had been broken into sometime between 6 pm on 7/31 and 9 am on 8/1. The driver's side door was damaged and items were missing from the car. Also on the morning of August 1, another Larch Lane resident found that her car was in disarray and her GPS unit, valued at $100, was missing.

On Fenimore Road a woman reported that her Jeep was broken into while it was parked in the garage overnight on 7/31 – 8/1. At 1 pm on August 1 she found the basement door, the side garage door and the car door open – but nothing was missing from the car.

On Walworth Avenue, residents found that their two cars were broken into that night as well. The interior light of their 2013 Mazda Suburban was on though nothing was missing. A 2004 Honda Pilot was tossed and coins were taken from the car. The resident reports that she was awoken around 4:15 am by the slam of a car door. She looked outside and saw a small sedan back out of her driveway and go north on Walworth toward White Plains. At the time she thought it was the newspaper delivery person.

Rental car wrecked: A rental car, parked on Carthage Road was damaged overnight on 8/2 -8/3. When the woman checked the car on the morning of August 3rd she found that it had two holes in the windshield, a broken left headlight and a hole in the hood of the car. Police said the damage was caused by a blunt, hard object.

While patrolling Freightway Garage, a police office found a 2008 Toyota with a broken driver's side window on level 3A. They contacted the owner who lives on Chateaux Circle. He said he had left the car there since July 27. He said that four pairs of sunglasses and $40.00 in quarters had been taken from the car. He also said that the rear tire was flat.

Missing jewels: A Kingston Road woman reported that a pearl tiara was damaged and a gold wedding band was missing from her home. Together, the two items are valued at $1,600. She suspects that workmen who were in the house in April may have been responsible.

Stolen bikes: A $400 blue Trek bicycle that belonged to a Kent Road man was stolen from the bike rack on East Parkway in Scarsdale Village between 8 am and 6 pm on July 15. A green Trek bicycle that was left unlocked behind a bench on East Parkway was also stolen between 4 pm and 7 pm on August 1. A woman had left the bike there for her husband to ride home later, but when he showed up the bike was gone.

Memorial Vandalized: The World War II Memorial plaque at Boniface Circle in Scarsdale Village was found damaged on the evening of July 30. A woman was looking at the plaque to see if she could find the name of her father's friend and noticed that someone had scratched, "I see dead people" on one of the plaques. The message, as well as a peace sign, a heart and a happy face had been scratched in the plaque.

Arrests: Police went to the aid of a taxi stuck at the intersection of Mamaroneck and Secor Roads on Sunday evening, August 4. The Union taxicab was pushed to the shoulder of the road and a tow truck was called. Police checked the driver's license and found that there was an active warrant for his arrest for two counts of sexual assault of a minor. The taxi was towed and Scarsdale police contacted Newark police who decided to extradite Francot Chouloute, age 37 of New Rochelle. At 10:30 pm he was brought to Village Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail.

No license: Walter Rivera, age 40 of Yonkers, was stopped by police at the corner of the Post Road and Rugby Lane at 8 am on July 31 when the scanner revealed that the car had a suspended registration. Rivera also had a suspended driver's license and no insurance. Police removed the license plates from the car, towed the car to Yonkers and gave Rivera numerous summonses.

Police were called about an erratic driver at the high school parking lot. At 12:07 am on August 1 they stopped the driver of black Cadillac Suburban who was burning tires and driving in circles in the parking lot. They stopped the driver and issued citations.

Driven nuts: A 19-year-old young woman from Port Chester who works as an EMT for the Scarsdale Rec Camp reported that she was harassed by two young men who are also employed at the camp. The woman has a nut allergy. She says she was in her office at Fox Meadow School around 3 pm on July 31 when the two men came by and made jokes about her allergy. She asked them to leave and they continued to harass her and touched items on her desk after they had touched nuts. The woman complained to the Rec Department Supervisor who said that she would discipline the young men.

Animals:

Dog found on Farley Road: A jogger found a dog without a collar on Farley Road at 8 pm on July 29. He stopped a few people to see if they recognized the dog but no one did. Police took custody of the dog and turned it over to the New Rochelle Humane Society.

On Saturday at 5 am a woman found a pug walking down the middle of Post Road. Police identified the owners and contacted them. They came to police headquarters to pick up the dog and were given a summons for "Dog at Large."

Post no bills: Police found two signs for "Class Act Musical Youth Theatre" at the intersection of Brewster and Butler Roads. The company was issued a violation for public posting of notices.

Vandals: A Morris Lane man reported that two lights at the end of his driveway were damaged sometime on August 2nd or 3rd. He asked police to make extra ride-bys.

Police received a complaint about a loud party and a fire on Tunstall Road at 10:30 pm on August 3. The partiers agreed to extinguish the fire in the fire pit and move the party indoors.
