A stately Colonial home with a sweeping circular driveway atop Greenacres Avenue is now for sale in Scarsdale.

Perched above the neighborhood, the 1.77 acre property affords a panoramic view of Greenacres and beyond. The property is landscaped and terraced with stone walls that lead to sitting areas, fountains and two Koi ponds. The winding pathways that extend around and down the hill take you through your own private country estate just a few minutes from the train station.

The original house was built in 1911. However, in 1928, architects Patterson & Wilcox and landscape architects Charles W. Leavitt & Son were retained to enhance both the home and the property. An article, published in Country Life Magazine in 1928, details the transformation of the “tall and rather forbidding house,” with the addition of a semi-circular portico at the front door and a Palladian window above it. The terraces, paths and gardens were designed to “relate perfectly to the house,” and “represents the ideal coordination of architecture and landscape design.”

According to early issues of the Scarsdale Inquirer, at the time of the renovation, the home was owned by Newcomb and Anna May Cleveland. Mr. Cleveland was the chairman of the board of Erickson and Company, a New York Advertising Agency. His wife, the former Anna May Ross “was the daughter of Riley R. Ross, publisher with Dodd, Mead and Company and Mary Willey Ross. She was a charter member of the Scarsdale Woman's Club and in former years had been active in connection with the flower shows of its garden section.”

In 1929 Cleveland sponsored a competition for a $1,000 award for sculpture that was granted to eighteen men who were responsible for the artistic enrichment of the Bronx River Parkway. He endowed a scientific prize that is still awarded today, called the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Newcomb Cleveland Prize.

All this history should not suggest that the house is locked in a former era. Features inside the house combine the best elements of the past with everything you need to live in it over a century later. Some of the most striking details are the dentil moldings, pocket doors, a call bell, back stairways, recessed cabinetry and a majestic circular stairway that extends from the first to the third floor.

All the rooms in the 7,200 square foot house are expansive, the layout is classic and there’s plenty of space for entertaining, living and working. The ample butler’s pantry and large kitchen complement a grand dining room with plenty of room for large celebrations. Another nice feature is a long galley room along the back of the house where you can enjoy the expansive views.

On the second floor the house has four large bedrooms all with their own baths. In fact, the primary suite has two bathrooms, a dressing room and another room that could be used as an office or nursery. All the bedrooms rooms are generously sized and there is a laundry room both there and on the lower level.

The biggest surprise came on the third floor where we found a large room with a stage and curtain and a ballerina’s barre along the wall. Rumor has it that the Broadway producer of “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown,” once owned the house and built the stage so that his children could perform. Also upstairs are three additional bedrooms.

The lower level provided a glimpse into history as it includes both an apartment with a small kitchen and another woodworking shop room. From this lower level there are doors out to stone terraces with frescoed walls and a “grotto” with a ceramic fountain. There are two garages below the house and another two in a freestanding garage at the base of the circular driveway.
