students inside albayFor the ninth consecutive year, the League of Women Voters of Scarsdale will select two high school students to attend the annual Students Inside Albany conference, to be held May 17 – 20, 2020. Any Sophomore, Junior or Senior student who attends Scarsdale High School or resides in the school district is eligible to apply. Students Inside Albany is a four-day conference designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, revised and enacted in New York State. This conference deepens their understanding of their individual responsibility in our representative democracy and provides them with tools for meeting that responsibility. Scarsdale students who attended this conference in the past were unanimous in their enthusiasm about the program. The conference allows them to interact with students from all over the state, learn about their New York State government and the process by which citizens can participate in policy making areas, as well as tour the capitol and meet state legislators. The League of Women Voters New York State Education Foundation, Inc. and our Scarsdale League will pay all students expenses, including hotel and meals.

Applications are available on the LWVS website (http://lwvs.org/youth.html) and are due by February 3, 2020.

For more information, including photos from last year’s conference, visit the League of Women Voters, New York State under the Youth Programs tab.

Last year’s Scarsdale attendees, Andrew Morin and Rishabh Gharekhan, are happy to answer questions from interested students. Contact LWVSyouthprograms@gmail.com for more information. scarsdalebagThe Scarsdale Reusable Bag Initiative continues the campaign we started months ago to inform our community about less environmental waste. We have since created the exclusive Scarsdale Reusable Bag and we hope it becomes a trademark of our town’s effort to make Earth a cleaner place. We are attempting to distribute the bags for free to all households in the near future. The reusable bag has a unique design, created by the local artist Simone Kestelman (www.simonekestelman.com) and sponsored by Julia B Fee Sotheby’s.

Plastic bags will be banned in the State of New York beginning March 2020 and we want to encourage Scarsdale residents to BRING REUSABLE BAGS WHEN DOING THEIR SHOPPING instead of paying for paper bags. Although they are a better alternative to plastic, paper bags use many resources to be produced, cost more money and take more space for storage.

When we distribute the bags, we will also remind residents that it’s not difficult to keep reusable bags in your car or rolled inside your handbag.

We hope to have your collaboration on this campaign. If you want to contact us for an article or interview, please call or e-mail Ines Rodrigues at inesinus@gmail.com or 914-548-4010.

Thank you!

FastovTrockSHS grads Hannah Fastov and Jonathan Trock were married at the Tribeca Rooftop on November 16, 2019. The two have known each other for years as they met in Scarsdale Middle School. Despite paving their own paths and discovering their passions throughout college, the couple never lost sight of each other after their Scarsdale High School graduation in 2008.

Hannah is now the CEO of her own handbag company, Go Dash Dot. Jon is working in the real estate industry as a real estate advisor at Ackman-Ziff. The couple lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. They celebrated their wedding with family and friends, including a huge Scarsdale contingent who cheered them on. The Fastov and Trock families are looking forward to an exciting future together.
