Bicycle Sundays are Back with a Celebration on May 15

Westchester Parks Foundation, formerly known as Friends of Westchester County Parks, announced the return of bicycle Sundays, which close the Bronx River Parkway for Sundays in the spring and fall for bikers, joggers and walkers.
The parkway will be closed from the Westchester County Center in White Plains, south to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers, a round-trip of 13.1 miles from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the following dates:
May 1, 8, 15, 22
June 5, 12, 19, 26
Sept 11, 18, 25
The program is supported by Con Edison and New York-Presbyterian, who each donated $20,000 for the initiative this year. To kick off the 42nd annual initiative, NewYork-Presbyterian will sponsor a celebration on Sunday, May 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the rest stop between Harney Road and Leewood Drive (Exits 10 and 9) on the northbound lane of the Bronx River Parkway.
There will be fun activities for everyone to enjoy, including free ice cream and water; bicycle safety reflector giveaways; and a raffle to win golf games and balls to use at county courses, tickets for Playland and premium seats to a Westchester Knicks basketball game. The party will be complete with live music on site by 100.7 WHUD radio with guest DJ Kacey Morabito Grean from Mike and Kacey in the Morning, as well as signage with fitness tips along the Bronx River Parkway.

Scarsdale Votes for Clinton and Kasich

Though the statewide election results from the New York State primaries on Tuesday April 19 were widely publicized, most don't know how their neighbors in Scarsdale voted.
The Westchester Board of Elections has released the vote counts for the Democratic and Republican primaries in Scarsdale. There's no surprise that Hillary Clinton was a big winner here, getting 2,203 votes to Sanders 584 or 79% of the vote.
The Republican results were a bit more interesting. It turns out that Scarsdalians did not favor frontrunner Donald Trump, instead giving John Kasich their votes. Out of a total count of 917 votes, 458 went to Kasich, 345 to Trump, 110 to Ted Cruz and 4 to Ben Carson.
A few of Hillary's Scarsdale fans went to her White Plains campaign headquarters on primary day where they met former President Bill Clinton.

Raiders Lacrosse Team Falls to White Plains and Mamaroneck

Scarsdale Boys Lacrosse have had an exhilarating season. With a 7-0 start to the season the boys were met with a tough upset as they fell to White Plains on Thursday 4/14. The team faced off against rival Mamaroneck on Tuesday 4/19, and suffered another loss despite strong preparation.
The game started with a goal in the opening minutes
by Junior William Cabrera, 1,0 Scarsdale. Mamaroneck quickly returned with a goal to tie the game. A goal by Freshman Andrew Bernstein returned the lead to the Raiders and Cabrera's reach around goal made it 3-1 before the end of the quarter. Halfway through the second quarter Mamaroneck closed the lead to 3-2, then 3-3. Mamaroneck scored again to take the lead for the first time of the game, now 4-3. Mamaroneck added to their lead twice more to make it 6-3. Sophomore Rob Rolfe responded to make it 6-4, then 6-5 with a goal coming from Junior Captain Cooper Schneider before the end of the quarter, and another at the start of the 3rd quarter.
Schneider completed his hat trick and returned the lead to the Raiders. Senior Captain Andre Cutrim added his first as the Raiders took a 8-6 lead before Mamaroneck returned to close the lead. Cabrera then gave the two goal lead back to the Raiders but Mamaroneck countered and tied the game up, then taking the lead. Adding another two before the end of the 3rd quarter, Mamaroneck lead 12-9. Mamaroneck scored again at the begging of the 4th quarter, but Cabrera ended the Raider's scoring drought as he added a quick goal. Mamaroneck responded with another two to make it 15-10 as Rolfe came back with a goal for the Raiders. Mamaroneck retaliated with three to quell the Raider's momentum, 18-11. Bernstein and Rolfe added two but it was too late, final score 18-13, Mamaroneck.
Scarsdale, now 7-2, will look to end their two game losing streak with games at Eastchester on Thursday 4/21, and Tappan Zee on Saturday 4/23. The Raiders seek to gain back their momentum in the latter part of the season as they edge towards playoffs."
Raiders Lacrosse Team on a Winning Streak

The Raiders have had an explosive start this season, opening with a streak of four wins, already surpassing their win total for the past two seasons combined. The Raider's success can be attributed to strong team leadership, new faces such as freshman Andrew Bernstein, and a change in team tactics. Scarsdale has yet to be seriously tested, and will face their first big test on Tuesday 4/12.
On Thursday 3/31 the Scarsdale Boys Lacrosse team faced Nanuet at home. The game opened quickly with Nanuet scoring within the first 2 minutes, 1-0, Nanuet. A quick pass by senior captain Elliot Graham lead to a responsive goal by freshman Andrew Bernstien ,1-1. Sophomore Rob Rolfe added to the tally with five minutes left, giving the Raiders a 2-1 lead. The lead was short lived as Nanuet pulled the game back from the Raiders with a long range goal, 2-2 to end the first quarter. Bernstein had a top shelf finish to give the Raiders the lead, but Nanuet countered with a low finish to tie the game 3-3. Bernstien responded with a goal to complete his hat-trick, 4-3 Raiders with five minutes remaining in the second quarter. Sophomore Cooper Schneider added to the lead to make it 5-3, and the score stood until the end of the half.
The 3rd quarter opened quickly, with Junior Cooper Schneider scoring to make it 6-3. Bernstein added another within two minutes to make it 7-3 Raiders. After some back and forth play, junior William Cabrera scored for the Raiders to make it 8-3 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, followed by another goal for Bernstein, with one minute remaining. Junior Seth Thornton followed with an immediate response to put the Raiders up 10-3, followed by another goal for Cabrera, 11-3 at the end of the third quarter. Nanuet opened up the fourth quarter with a goal to shorten the lead to 11-4, quickly countered by a long range shot from senior captain Andre Cutrim to make it 12-4, his first of the season. Andrew Bernstein also followed for his sixth of the game, and another came from Graham, then Thornton to make it 15-4. An exciting mid-air one-handed shot from Bernstein, his seventh, made it 16-4 as the game comes to a close.
On Saturday 4/2 the Scarsdale Boys Lacrosse Team faced off against Horace Greeley at Greeley. The game started slowly, ending the first quarter 5-3, with goals coming from Junior William Cabrera and Senior Captain Elliot Graham. The Raiders came out strong in the second quarter, out scoring their opponents 5-1, behind a hat trick from Cabrera, ending the half 10-4. The Raiders had another strong quarter in the third quarter, outscoring the home side 4-1 behind a hat trick from Graham, bringing the score to 14-5. Greeley started the fourth quarter with a quick goal, fighting hard with the Raiders but eventually succumbed to three from the away side with goals coming for the first time this season from Senior Andrew Braun and Sophomore Jack Brosgol. The Raiders ended the game 17-7.
On Tuesday 4/5 the Boys lacrosse faced off against Nyack at home. The game opened quickly, with Junior Seth Thornton scoring within the opening minute. Junior William Cabrera followed with a hat trick within five minutes, before Junior Cooper Schneider added his first of the game. Cabrera scored another giving the Raiders a 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. Schneider added another at the beginning of the second quarter followed by another hat trick, this time by Senior Captain Elliot Graham, to end the half 10-0. Cabrera scored in an otherwise slow third quarter, but in the fourth quarter Nyack scored their first of the game, but were quickly countered with a goal from Graham, his fourth of the game. Nyack returned with one more goal before the end of the game, but it was too late. Final score; Raiders 13, Nyack 2. Graham finished the game with 4 goals and 5 assists, and Cabrera finished with 6 goals, as they lead the Raiders to a strong victory.
The Raiders hope to continue this strong momentum into a difficult upcoming game versus Mamaroneck on April 19th at home. Freshman Andrew Bernstein, offered some encouragement for the Raiders saying, "The big day is April 19 against Mamo. We haven't beaten them in a while and with our new additions and improvements by former players we think this year can be the year."

State Funds Needed for Local Road Resurfacing

State funds for critical local infrastructure needs for roadways and bridges are shrinking, further increasing the pressure on local governments to raise property taxes to fill the gap. Scarsdale Mayor Jon Mark sent letters to the Chairmen of the NYS Transportation Committee Joseph E. Robach and David F. Grant asking them to re-appropriate funds for road re-surfacing.

Dear Senator Robach,
The Village of Scarsdale is disappointed that the adopted FY2017 New York State budget fails to adequately address pressing un-funded local infrastructure needs, including roadway rehabilitation/reconstruction and bridge repair or replacement, as well as other non-transportation infrastructure essentials. While the State does provide The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) support, funding levels have not kept pace with increasing costs.
The cities, towns, and villages of New York are struggling to maintain infrastructure critical not only to the social, environmental, and economic health of localities, but also to that of the State of New York. Deferred maintenance contributes heavily to a deteriorated road network and significantly amplifies costs associated with roadway rehabilitation, once such important repairs are finally possible to undertake. Local fiscal constraints, including flat or declining non-property tax revenues, severe limitations on property tax revenue growth as a result of the State of New York's tax cap legislation, sharply escalating costs that are beyond local control, such as employee health premiums through the New York State Health Insurance Program, and reductions in necessary State revenue sharing all contribute to a downward spiral in local roadway conditions, as there is simply not enough revenue to rise to the infrastructure challenges with which we are confronted.
The new status quo, one where critical infrastructure is neglected and increasingly results in reduced reliability and higher costs to taxpayers, is not sustainable. As the safety and reliability of New York's infrastructure continues to erode, we are placing our future economic competitiveness and the desirability of our communities at risk.
I urge you, as New York State Senate Transportation Committee Chair, to increase the visibility of this substantial local concern and encourage additional FY2017 funding to be re-appropriated in support of local roadway resurfacing and rehabilitation.
