Glamour Magazine Names Maggie Dunne to List of Top College Women

Maggie Dunne of Scarsdale was honored as one of Glamour magazine’s Top 10 College Women for 2012. An SHS graduate, Dunne is currently studying Native American studies at Colgate University. She was selected for her work on behalf of the Lakota Pine Ridge Indians in South Dakota who she has helped via the Lakota Pine Ridge Children’s Enrichment Program which she launched to address Native American poverty in South Dakota. To further her cause Dunne traveled to Bangladesh to learn aid techniques to be used on the reservation, and has so far distributed more than $100,000 worth of coats, boots, and books to the people there.
Dunne was awarded the grand prize of $20,000 in the competition that has recognized 10 students from across the country for the past 55 years for campus leadership, scholastic achievement, community involvement and unique, inspiring goals. According to information on Colgate Connect, Dunne’s interest in Native Americans began when she took a volunteer trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota during an alternative spring break trip as a high school sophomore. She said, “I’d never seen poverty like that—and in our own country!” she says. “I vowed to go back every year for the rest of my life.”
Inspired to help, during her junior year in Scarsdale Dunne organized a children’s coat and book drive. To her surprise, her idea to “do something a little extra” yielded more than 2,000 children’s books and more than 300 children’s coats, which she personally distributed to the schools on a return trip that year.
Her continuous fundraising efforts caught the attention of a local corporate lawyer, who offered to help Dunne take her cause to the next level. With the lawyer’s assistance, Dunne created the nonprofit organization Lakota Pine Ridge Children’s Enrichment Project Limited (LPRCEP), through which she gathers resources for the Lakota children. She continued the work of the group at Colgate, organizing fundraisers, collecting clothing, electronics and refrigerators as well as an alternative spring break trip for Colgate students to Pine Ridge.

The Adult Board of the Scarsdale Teen Center invites community members who support the mission of a safe, alcohol and drug free place for our teens to join the Board for 2012-13.
Responsibilities of the Adult Board include community relations, setting policy and promoting community driven programming, publicity, overseeing facility/fiscal/legal management and fundraising.
The Scarsdale Teen Center, located at 862 Scarsdale Avenue, provides teen programming to Scarsdale’s middle school and high school teens residing in Scarsdale and/or attending Scarsdale’s public schools or residing in Scarsdale and attending private school. Junior League Raises Over $65,000 at 65th Anniversary Gala

The Junior League of Central Westchester (JLCW) announced today that its 65th Anniversary Gala, on March 16, 2012 at Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester, far surpassed its fundraising goals with proceeds over $65,000. The Gala celebrated the JLCW’s growth over 65 years, and the organization’s commitment to promoting volunteerism; developing the potential of women; and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The success of the Gala, co-chaired by Marcy Berman-Goldstein and Leslie Chang, will provide essential financial support for the JLCW’s educational and charitable projects.
The theme of the gala was “Lights, Camera, ACTION!” After a walk down the red carpet, over 330 guests were transported back to Old Hollywood with glamorous event décor that was largely donated by Diana Gould.
Master of Ceremonies, Brian Conybeare, Anchor from News 12 Westchester, led an awards program for the evening’s honorees. Susan Wayne,
President and CEO of Family Services of Westchester (FSW) was on hand to accept FSW’s Community Partner Award for its demonstrated excellence in partnering with the JLCW. Assemblywoman Amy Paulin presented the Distinguished Sustainer Award to JLCW member and Scarsdale resident Lynne Clark. Lynne was welcomed to the stage with a standing ovation for her tireless commitment to serving the community through the Junior League and beyond. Delly Beekman, President of the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), was in attendance to induct many past presidents into the JLCW’s Circle of Leadership with engraved sterling silver compacts donated by Links of London.
Guests danced the night away to music by The Del Bocas, a 6-member band of Scarsdale and Edgemont residents. They were made to feel like true celebrities with many photo opportunities by Londin Photography including on the red carpet and in the very popular photo booth. During the cocktail hour and dinner, there was a silent auction, including exciting one-of-a-kind items from Neiman Marcus, the Ritz-Carlton, New York Knicks, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and The Palm Tribeca.

Congregants Say Goodbye to Rabbi Jacobs

More than 700 Westchester Reform Temple (WRT) congregants celebrated Rabbi Richard Jacobs and his family on Saturday, March 17, 2012 with an afternoon of social action and an evening of music and tribute. During this special event, the community honored the Rabbi’s 20 years of service to WRT by naming an education wing for him – The Rabbi Richard Jacobs Beit Midrash. Completed last year, the Beit Midrash (House of Learning) consists of 16 classrooms, a library and two gathering spaces – all built as part of Rabbi Jacobs’ vision of a learning community for all ages. Rabbi Jacobs left WRT to become the President of the Union for Reform Judaism, the roof organization for over 900 congregations and 1.5 million Jews.

The spring fundraising season is here. Save the date for these important community events: On March 16, the Junior League of Central Westchester will celebrate their 65th Anniversary with a gala: “Lights, Camera, ACTION!” at 7:00 pm at Lake Isle Country Club. The JLCW will celebrate 65 years of growth and will help them continue to promote the literacy, health and welfare of children and families in the JLCW service areas of White Plains, Greenburgh, Eastchester and Scarsdale. The evening will include cocktails, dinner and dancing and the emcee of the event will be Brian Conybeare, Anchor from News 12 Westchester. Honorees of the evening will be Family Services of Westchester, Scarsdale resident and JLCW member Lynne Clark, and Past Presidents of the JLCW. On Wednesday April 18, Florie Wachtenheim will be honored for outstanding volunteer community service at the Scarsdale Bowl Dinner at Lake Isle Country Club. Wachtenheim will be the 75th recipient of the Scarsdale Bowl Award and the 22nd woman selected. Nominators on the Scarsdale Bowl Committee recommended Wachtenheim as “a volunteer leader in Scarsdale who worked cooperatively with neighbors to make the right choices as a group.” The dinner will be held at Lake Isle Country Club at 6:30 pm. Pediatric Cancer Foundation is rocking to ‘80’s flavored funk as well as songs by the Beatles, Clapton, and Stones, Thursday, April 19, 2012, from 7-11pm at Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club, 555 South Barry Ave., Mamaroneck, NY. Let’s Get Ready will hold their Sixth Annual Gala Event at 583 Park Avenue (at 63rd Street) on Monday, April 23rd. The event will honor the Cornell Let's Get Ready Program and Chase. Let’s Get Ready expands college access for motivated, low-income high school students by providing FREE SAT preparation and college admission counseling. They mobilize and train college student volunteers to be the "Coaches", mentors, and role-models who provide not only SAT instruction and college admissions guidance, but the encouragement and inspiration students need to succeed. LGR runs 63 programs throughout the northeast serving about 2,560 students with the assistance of over 1,000 college volunteers. Westchester Jewish Community Services will hold their 2012 gala at the Moderne Barn in Armonk on Tuesday April 24 at 6:30 pm. The event will honor Victor Hershaft and Laura Klenhandler. DOROT alleviates social isolation among the elderly and provides services to help them live independently as valued members of the community.
