Hoff-Barthelson Music School, located at 25 School Lane in Scarsdale, invites children, families, and adults of all ages to discover the joy of music learning at its Winter Open House on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 1:00–3:00 pm. A snow date is scheduled for Sunday, January 25, 2026.

During this engaging, hands-on event, guests will have the opportunity to sample private mini-lessons with the School’s distinguished faculty, explore a wide range of instruments, and experience the personalized, student-centered approach that has made Hoff-Barthelson one of the nation’s premier community music schools.

Visitors interested in expanding their musical understanding are encouraged to stop by the Musicianship and Composition Drop-in, where they can meet Dr. Derek Cooper and learn more about the School’s dynamic classes for both children and adults.

For those ready to begin—or continue—their musical journey—personalized advisement and placement will be available through one-on-one meetings with Deans Christopher Kenniff and April Johnson, with on-site enrollment support provided by the Registrar.

“Our Winter Open House is a wonderful opportunity for prospective students and families to experience the warmth, creativity, and connection that define our community,” said Dean Christopher Kenniff. “Whether you’re exploring an instrument for the first time or returning to music after many years, we’re here to support your growth with exceptional teaching and a welcoming environment.”

The Planning Board of the Village of Scarsdale will meet on Tuesday, January 13 at 7:00 PM to consider an application of 80 Garden Road LLC, Wood Garden Associates LLC and 2156 2nd Avenue LLC for subdivision approval, pursuant to Chapters 310 and A319 of the Village Code, to merge and subdivide the existing three tax lots of 80, 88, and 90 Garden Road into six tax lots and site plan approval related to disturbance of the Property Buffer. Applicant proposes to demolish two existing single family homes and construct five new single family homes.

Join Marcus Renna in the Scott Room for a screening and discussion of the 1966 heist comedy How to Steal a Million, directed by William Wyler and starring Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole, was based off of the short story "Venus Rising" by George Bradshaw.

Prominent Paris art collector Charles Bonnet is secretly an art forger, much to the disapproval of his daughter Nicole (Hepburn). Late one night, Nicole encounters Simon Dermott (O'Toole) apparently in the process of stealing one of Charles's forged Van Gogh paintings. Holding the would-be burglar at gunpoint with an antique, Nicole accidentally injures Simon. Rather than inform the police and trigger an investigation that might reveal the fake paintings, Nicole decides to drive the charming Simon back to his hotel, to her consternation and his amusement.

The next day, Charles is flush with pride that his collection will form the centerpiece of a new exhibit at a prominent museum and carelessly signs off the museum's insurance policy for loaned artwork, not realizing that it requires a forensic examination of the pieces - which will reveal them as fakes. Desperate to protect her father, Nicole enlists Simon to plan a heist to steal the forged Venus statuette before it can be examined. Naturally, hijinks ensue.

How to Steal a Million is notable both for its twist ending and the elegant costuming, exclusively designed by Givenchy.

A delightful romp of a comedy, much parodied and homaged in later films.

2026 marks the semiquincentennial, or 250th anniversary, of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Did you know that at least two Scarsdale residents were present at the ratification of the Declaration that took place in White Plains on July 11th, 1776? While no major battles took place in Scarsdale during the Revolution, the War made its presence felt in many ways for the few residents of the rural farming town called Scarsdale.

Join Local History Librarian Dan Glauber to learn more about what life was like in Scarsdale during the American Revolution.

She has a bachelor’s in Human and Organizational Development, with an emphasis on Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness from Vanderbilt University and a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Her career spans investment banking, brand management, and startup tech companies, always focusing on the opportunity to take a step back to identify key themes of success, capability, and professional joy. She lives in Rye, New York.

On Saturday, February 21, Rhonda Denet returns to take you on a musical journey back to the vibrant 60s and 70s, celebrating the iconic rhythm & blues and soul that defined an era. Ms. Denet will perform the hits of Motown legends like The Temptations, The Four Tops, and the Jackson 5, and help shine a light on underrated artists who thrived outside the Motown label, with highlights from the Stax, Philles and Chess labels including Otis Redding, The Ronettes and Etta James.

Denét grew up in Washington, D.C. and realized at an early age that music would be a driving force in her life. She earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from New York University and a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from Florida State University. Following her graduate studies, Denét returned to New York City with a conviction not only to become an active member of its vibrant musical community but to create new opportunities that would reflect her soulful artistic expression. Based in Newark, New Jersey, the jazz/soul vocalist, songwriter, bandleader, music historian, and entrepreneur makes a full-time living doing what she LOVES…making music.

Frederick Law Olmsted - the namesake of Olmsted Road here in Scarsdale - was one of the foremost American landscape architects, conservationists, and journalists of the 19th century. His work was at the forefront of the movement for Parks For The People, establishing an outstanding legacy of national and urban parks, mostly famously the design of Central Park in Manhattan with his partner Calvert Vaux. Olmsted sought to provide people with landscapes to escape congested urban living and industrial sprawl. Come hear from landscape designer and educator Jennifer Yates as she explores Olmsted's legacy and showcases the natural beauty of the parks he helped to build during a formative time in the nation's history.

About the presenter:
Jennifer Yates is an experienced, award-winning Landscape Designer. Her expertise in the complementary fields of architecture, horticulture and the environment enable her to design layered, sustainable, native infused gardens. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a certification in organic farming from Northeast Organic Farming Association. She also studied landscape architecture at the New York Botanical Gardens. Jennifer has lectured at botanical gardens around the country on topics like notable garden designers, sustainable garden design, and rain gardens.

Big Bad Wolf & the Masquerade Ball - Everyone in town was buzzing with anticipation for the royal masquerade ball—except Wolf. He doesn’t like treats, or costumes, or parties. He would rather crash the party and ruin it. Wolf disguises himself and goes to the ball, but before he can reveal himself and scare everyone, he meets the prince. The prince is tired of royal life. He's not allowed to dance, eat dessert, or even dress up for his own costume party! He is supposed to be good all the time. What a nightmare!

David Sherrin is a national award-winning teacher at Scarsdale High School. He is also the author of Big Bad Wolf's Yom Kippur, The Baddest Wolf of All, and several books about teaching history. David lives in Tarrytown, NY and is the proud dad of three children.
